Rhodes is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Greece. It is located on the border of Europe and Asia, in the Aegean Sea and is the largest island in the Dodecanese archipelago. Its name comes from the rose. Rhodes has been an important cultural and commercial center of Greece and the entire Mediterranean region since ancient times. After that, the island changed hands many times, so today you can see the influence of many cultures and the remains of different architectural styles. It is a great place for a family holiday thanks to the large number of attractions, the possibility to admire extremely valuable monuments and one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. In addition, Rhodes is only 20 km from the coast of Turkey, so you can arrange a family trip by ferry.
The ancient city of Rhodes
The main and most important city is, of course, the city of Rhodes in the northern part of the island. It was founded in 407 BC. and quickly became one of the most important ports in the region. It is one of the largest ancient cities in Europe, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Evidence of the city’s wealth in ancient times was the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which does not exist today. A huge, over 30-meter-high statue of the god Helios was made of bronze and placed on a 10-meter plinth at the entrance to the harbor bay.
Other important monuments here include the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights, which now houses a museum, the defensive walls, the picturesque Street of the Knights of Rhodes, the Johannite Hospital – the seat of the Archaeological Museum, and the Mosque of Suleiman.
The Sea Aquarium is one of the tourist attractions of the capital city of Rhodes and is located on the very northern tip of the Greek island of Rhodes. In its water tanks, visitors can observe the most famous animals of the Mediterranean Sea. The Rhodes Aquarium is one of the most important marine research centers in Greece, and it also includes a smaller natural history museum.
If you get tired of the stone buildings of the city of Rhodes and want to enjoy greenery and a bit of nature, head to the park on the outskirts of the city, where small waterfalls and ponds are hidden, in the enclosures you can watch fallow deer and peacocks walking. Pines, cypresses, sycamores, oleanders, maples and pines grow everywhere. On the edge of the park you will find the so-called Tomb of the Ptolemies, a square rock tomb dating from the 4th century BC, which already consists of two rooms. In the past, the park was the site of a school of rhetoric where famous Greeks and Romans such as Julius Ceasar, Cato, Cicero, Brutus and others performed.
Faliraki Water Park
Perfect place if you want to have a lot of fun with many attractions like giant water slides, waterslides, wave tank, kamikaze, black hole. The water park is one of the largest in Europe and will offer you almost everything you can think of. Kids will also have lots of fun here on pirate ships, lazy rivers and wading pools. Everyone will surely find something for themselves here.
Farma of Rhodes
You will definitely score points with your children by visiting this place. The animals can be fed at the Farma of Rhodes. At the entrance you can get a bag for the ostriches or bags of vegetables for the other animals. The main attraction here are the already mentioned ostriches, but we can also find other animals here – camels, llamas, donkeys, pigs and goats. The goats are in an enclosure where you can go inside to see them. At the end of the road there are still different types of poultry and birds. And also a restaurant and a shop with farm products.
The small AquaWorld Faliraki focuses mainly on rescuing injured marine animals. During a walk through this attraction, you will mainly see the marine fauna of the Aegean, Cretan and Mediterranean seas. For example, a variety of fish, stingrays, sharks, crabs, starfish and sea turtles await you. You can even touch some selected species.
Bee Museum of Rhodes
This exhibition is dedicated to bees. The magical smell of honey hits you outside even before you enter. In the modern facilities of the Bee Museum of Rhodes, you and your children will learn about how important bees are to life on our planet. You will learn about the products produced by bees and get to know the world-famous Greek honey.
The museum is not big, but it has a lot of nice exhibits and a lot of information. Its size is ideal for small children as they do not get tired while walking. There is also an installation with live bees.
Valley of butterflies Petaloudés
This is probably the most famous attraction of the island of Rhodes. Here you can admire unique butterflies in their natural environment among beautiful greenery. Park for free at the bottom of the valley and you can start enjoying yourself. Upstairs you can have refreshments. The way back follows the same route. As the route is partly up stairs, it is not suitable for taking a pram here. The butterflies are in the valley until it gets cold and it starts raining, which is said to be in October.
Rhodes Toy Museum
A place that is definitely worth visiting. If you drive by, don’t hesitate to stop here. It’s like going back in time. Old toys, games, cameras, televisions and much more. In the basement of the museum you can play, test old machines and game consoles for as long as you want! There is also refreshments, but mainly very pleasant, willing and smiling people.
