Salzburg: attractions for children
The city provides families with children with excellent facilities and many attractions. So what can we see at our Slazburg city break with kids?
Puppet Museum (Marionetten museum)
The well-known Salzburg Puppet Theater (Marionetten theater) has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since September 2016 thanks to its original puppet design and puppet theater. The puppet museum is located inside the Hohensalzburg Fortress. It’s a small but interesting exhibition that contains a bit of scary figurines.
Toy Museum (Spielzeug Museum)
A very good place is the Toy Museum in the former hospital – a municipal poorhouse. An exhibition with popular treasures of generations of children is organized on two floors. Teddy bears, tin cars, train tracks, dolls and plush toys. The toy museum is modern and interactive. Children can not only watch but also play. Entrance is without shoes.
Salzburg Nature Museum (Haus der Natur)
A place you must see in Salzburg with children. The Museum of Nature (Haus der Natur) is no longer so interactive. It is more of a traditional character, but the reconstruction of dinosaurs, an aquarium or an exhibition on space will literally captivate children. The expositions of stones and minerals as well as the Salzburg salt are beautiful.
This device is not one of the big ones, but it is very original. The Anif Zoo is located on the outskirts of Salzburg. It is divided by continents. Probably the most impressive is the enclosure for wolves that go up an insanely steep slope. There are also many felines, very photogenic flamingos and pelicans. You can watch the brown bear or lions. There is also a paddock for small pets, which can feed, pet and play with them.
Mirabell Palace and playground
What kind of guide to Salzburg would it be with the children if there was no playground? One is located in the Mirabell Palace, for example. Of course, don’t miss a walk in the luxurious gardens and admire the castle on the hill from a different perspective. The palace and garden were built at the beginning of the 17th century, today it has a registry office. Next to the garden is an outdoor wooden ecological playground. There must be wonderful wild children in Austria.
Water games in Hellbrunn
Especially on hot days, be sure to visit this attraction. For over 400 years, visitors to Hellbrunn Castle have enjoyed the Water Games in a princely manner. This is a unique performance in which the main actor is water, which is also a source of many surprises! Markus Sittikus used the many springs that gush from the interior of Hellbrunn Mountain to the surface of the earth to entertain his guests. From mechanical theater to deer spewing water to a crown dancing on a thin jet of water – hydraulic machines impress with their originality and surprising effects. Dozens of fountains or water jets hidden in the ground are splashing by passers-by, at the moment when they least expect it.
