SOME INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT Greece
Sea – Greece is located in the southeast of Europe, where it is located on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula. It includes the mainland and, in the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean, several large islands (in seven administrative units) and a large number of smaller islets.
Islands – The largest island is Crete (8,336 km2), followed by Évvia (3,655 km2), Lesbos (1,630 km2) and Rhodes (1,398 km2). In the west of Greece lie the Ionian Islands (Kefalonia, Corfu, Zakynthos), in the Aegean Sea lie the Aegean Islands (Chios, Lesbos), Sporades or Northern Sporades (Skiathos, Skyros), Cyclades (Andros, Naxos) and the Dodecanese or Southern Sporades (Kos, Rhodes). Including the islands, the total length of the Greek coast is 14,000 km, of which 4,000 are land.
Nature – Greece is one of the most mountainous countries in Europe. More than three-quarters of the country is occupied by mountains and mountain ranges. The highest mountain range is located in the northeastern part of the country, Olympus (2,917 m). In the east of the country, in the area of the border with Bulgaria, lies the Rhodope Mountains. South of the area lies the rugged Chalkidi Peninsula.
Historical monuments and tourist attractions – When you get tired of the sun on the beach, you can set out to discover the beauties of Greek landmarks. Of the famous seven wonders of the world described by Philo of Byzantine in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, four were in ancient Greece (the Colossus of Rhodes on Rhodes, the statue of the god Zeus at Olympia, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the monumental tomb of King Mausoleum and the temple of the goddess Artemis at Ephesus). On every Greek island you will find many churches, temples and other monuments, which reflect the rich history of this country as well as the mythical stories and legends associated with the Greek world of the gods.
Greek gastronomy – In Greece, you can enjoy a variety of Mediterranean cuisine full of fresh vegetables, delicious yoghurts, fish and sheep and goat meat. Everything is prepared in delicious olive oil. Wine vinegar or feta cheese, which is made from sheep’s milk, is added to the salads. One of the traditional Greek dishes is gyros – meat grilled, wrapped in a pancake made of leavened dough with pieces of tomato, lettuce and flavored with mustard or tzatziki. Tzatziki are made from white Greek yogurt with grated cucumber, garlic, olive oil and salt. Souvlaki is also known – lamb with vegetables and spices, which is grilled on a stick. And we must not forget the Greek moussaka, a dish prepared from minced meat and eggplant.

One of the interesting souvenirs you can bring from your holiday in Greece is “matóchandro”. It is a symbol of the “blue eye”, whose task is to protect its owner from evil. People believe that the talisman has the power to reflect these forces. Sometimes it happens that the amulet itself breaks to pieces when repulsing an evil force. Then it needs to be thrown away, because the accumulated evil energy is said to flow from it.
